TUSHAR MADHAV
Tushar Madhav (b1985, India) is a filmmaker and moving image artist working at the convergence of creative documentary film, photography, archival research and performance-making. He is interested in searching for lived histories, exploring the interactions of human and non-human by employing cinematic impulses as creative rituals. His work investigates the politics of artmaking, reflecting on construction of dominant gaze regimes within socio-cultural spaces.

In 2017, he won the 64th National Film Award of India for his first feature documentary film ‘A Ballad of Maladies’ that explores Kashmir conflict through the lens of its contemporary artists and poets. The film won several other awards and held screenings around the world at film festivals, museums and galleries.
His performance and writing in the collaborative documentary theatre 'The Lonely Hearts Club Show' was supported by and performed at Goethe Institut India in 2021 during the pandemic, which he has written about in an essay published in the 2023 Forum Modernes Theater Journal, Germany.

Tushar has received grants and fellowships for his independent film and artistic research projects from India Foundation for the Arts, Catapult Film Fund, Field of Vision and the DMZ Docs Fund.
Recipient of the AHK Talent Grant, Holland Scholarship and the Gonda PhD grant, he is presently pursuing practice-based PhD Arts at Leiden University, developing an expanded-cinema project that probes the art and suicide of Indian painter Jangarh Singh Shyam.

RAM BAHADUR TROPHY
for BEST FILM
"The subcontinent is rife with conflict. There are wars that raged fiercely before burning themselves out. There are conflicts that continue to smoulder, and there are others in which homes are still set on fire driving hundreds of thousands of refugees across borders. In all of these conflicts, it is the civilians who are caught in the middle, they are ones who have to struggle to live and try not to die. The film explores an ongoing conflict that has trapped a people for decades, and how artists find an outlet in the arts and music."
- Jury citation at 11th Film Southasia
